How To Holiday Shop On A Budget

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

If you haven't already started thinking about it, we bet holiday shopping will pop into your mind after Thanksgiving dinner is done. After all, Black Friday ultimately kicks off the season, and if you want to get ahead you're probably at least considering getting started in the next week or so. But just because days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday exist where you can find killer sales for the most sought out items on this year's wish-lists, we know not everyone has the leisure of swiping their credit card without a care - that's why we've prepared these tips on how to find the perfect gifts on a budget:
Tips for holiday shopping on a budget
Create categories: Start by making a list of all those you plan to buy gifts for, then divide them into categories - for example, family, friends, work and school. After this is set, decide how much of your budget you'd like to allocate to each group. Since chances are you probably want to spend more on family than your coworkers, setting a budget for each category can help you avoid overspending on certain individuals.

No new credit cards: A common question that you'll likely be asked every time you shop at a new store is if you'd like to open a store card. Although they may offer exciting incentives such as a certain percent off of your purchase, saying yes could dig you into a hole since you may be inclined to spend more as a result.

Avoid last minute trips: If you're looking to get the best bang for your buck, you don't want to be out shopping the day before it's time to exchange gifts. Why? At this point, you won't have enough time to look for coupons or compare prices at other stores. To feel confident that you found the best price in town, you should have your shopping done well before the holidays actually arrive.

Considering that the holidays are supposed to be an exciting time of year, we certainly don't want you to feel like you can't enjoy them because you have a strict budget to follow - that's where these three tips come into play. And the best part is, they're all pretty simple to follow!

Money Myths That Are Costing You To Believe

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

Let's face it, any time there is an opportunity to save money, most of us would jump right on it - it's only natural! But what if the opportunities you thought were great actually turned out to be costing you more? If you're a firm believer in everything you hear, you may be losing more than you save - money myths are everywhere! Don't worry, though, we're here to debunk them for you and provide you with the truth:
Money Myths | Myths About Money
Myth #1: The cheaper option is always the better option.
Yes, purchasing the cheaper option can help you financially at the time, but in some cases this will require you to spend more later on. Take home appliances for instance. You may feel like you're shopping smart by purchasing the cheaper of two washing machines, but down the line the cheaper product may cost you more in repairs or worse, complete replacement. When it comes to deciding between options, you really need to weigh the pros and cons rather than automatically reach for the lower price tag.

Myth #2: Always head to the clearance rack.
Of course buying items off of clearance racks will be cheaper than those that are not, but sometimes seeing a "great deal" may encourage you to buy things that you don't really need. Even if the item is inexpensive, it's still extra money coming out of your pocket. If, however, the clearance rack is your favorite place to shop, only look for the items you set out for and, if they aren't there, head elsewhere.

Myth #3: Cash always wins.
There is definitely truth to the idea that if you leave your credit cards at home you won't be tempted to spend more than you can afford, but don't forget to think about your banking and how you keep track of your money. With cash, it can be easy to lose sight of certain purchases and ultimately make banking harder - this could also lead you to spend more than you realize. If you prefer cash over credit, make sure you're organized financially so that you don't stray too far off course.

For a list of additional myths that are costing you to believe, check out this article from U.S News and World Report.

As a leading financial planning firm, we at American Investment Planners LLC want you to feel confident in your financial situation and seek advice that only works in your favor. How To Avoid Holiday Debt

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

If there's a time of the year where your wallet cries for help the most, it is most definitely the holiday season. Between gifts, parties, decorations and travel if necessary, you probably shell out more cash during the last two months or so of the year than you do the other 10 (give or take). Unfortunately, if you aren't careful, this could also cause you to struggle financially once January rolls around.
How To Avoid Holiday Debt
Rather than have debt haunt you after the holidays are over, utilize these tips to avoid it from the start:

Create a plan: Start by making a list of all of your holiday expenses (then check it twice!). By having a clear outline of all of the purchases you have to make, it will be much easier for you to stay within your budget. If you already know the exact gifts you'll be buying, get specific and list them as well to avoid spending more on any one person than you planned to.

Make it meaningful: It's the thought that counts! Rather than set out for the most expensive gadgets, jewelry and accessories for family and friends, look for something more meaningful instead. For example, while your sister may really love that designer handbag, consider putting together a collage of all of your favorite memories and have it framed. Even though they may be smaller and not nearly as pricey, gifts that come from the heart are always a win-win.

Set credit cards aside: Your credit card practically screams "use me" when it's just sitting in your wallet or in your purse. Therefore, you may find it's best to just keep it at home. Though you won't have as much money at your disposal to use during your holiday shopping spree, relying only on cash can prevent you from spending more than you can afford.

Shop smart: While searching for coupons and comparing deals at different stores can be time consuming, it will be time well spent. Especially when you're looking for items that are costly, you'll want to be sure you're getting the best bang for your buck, even if it's just a few dollars here and there.

Put your wants aside: It can be easy to add items you want to your shopping cart as you buy for family and friends, but remember that even small gifts for yourself add up. Before you head out, make a promise to yourself that you'll only buy what you set out for, not all of those little extras that are hard to resist.

Although it is considered one of happiest times of the year, we know that the holiday season can be stressful when money comes into play. However, by following the five tips we listed above, you can be on your way to a debt-free holiday!

Medicare Changes and Open Enrollment for 2015/2016

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

Medicare Changes and Open Enrollment

Health insurance is one of the most important aspects of financial planning, especially as you begin to get older. And if you haven't already heard, Medicare has been making some changes, with two new types of coverage being added since it first became a law in 1965. With some open enrollment periods already open and others just around the corner, you'll want to know about the following to see if your current coverage is worth changing.

Medicare Changes

Along with Part A hospital insurance and Part B medical insurance (what is now called Original Medicare), two new parts - C and D - have been added to coverage through Medicare plans. Part C, which is also known as Medicare Advantage, is said to replace Original Medicare - most of the time, it will include prescription drug coverage and several other benefits as well. Part D on the other hand, which is specifically for Prescription Drug Coverage, can be chosen alongside Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage Plans that do not include such drug benefits at the time.

Open Enrollment Periods:

There are three open enrollment periods that you should be aware of if you participate in a Medicare plan; they are:
  1. October 15 to December 7: This open enrollment period is for those who currently have Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug plans. During this time Medicare beneficiaries can change between plans, join a Part D plan or drop their prescription coverage completely. Changes made will be effective as of January 1 of next year.
  2. January 1 to February 14: The open enrollment period beginning January 1 is specifically for those with Medicare Advantage Plans - this is the time where they can switch to an Original Medicare plan. If this is a change that you choose, your deadline to enroll in a Part D Prescription Drug Plan is February 14.
  3. December 8 to November 30: Also called the "Five-Star Special Enrollment Period," this time allows for Medicare beneficiaries to make the switch to a "5-star" Medicare Advantage Plan, Prescription Drug Plan or Medicare Cost Plan.

Reasons Why You Should Start Investing In November

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

Reasons To Start Investing In November
It's never too early or too late to start investing, but believe it or not there is a certain span of months throughout the year when getting started is ideal. When is that, you may ask? The answer is any time between November and April; according to U.S News and World Report Money. Even if you are actively investing and have an account such as a 401(k), now is a good time to start looking at where your money is currently allocated, as you may want to make some changes. Here's why:

Just like businesses, sports teams, even students in school, have their ups and downs, so does the stock market, and research has shown that the U.S stock market has "consistently produced outsized returns" from November to April when compared to May to October. Knowing this, it seems only obvious that now is the right time to start looking into your investment options. While you may not have imagined the stocks to be something seasonal, the truth is that they are! This is in part due to the fact that as the year comes to a close, some people find themselves with extra money that they've saved or year-end bonuses that they can comfortably pass on to the stock market. Additionally, it may have something to do with the fact that tax season occurs during this window, which may encourage more people to be funding accounts that could directly effect the stock market.

The moral of the story is that if you haven't invested yet this year, now is the time to start thinking about doing so! To read more about why this six month period is a game changer for investors, check out this article from U.S News and World Report.

Once you've made the decision to start investing, or if you already have but need some guidance on your current investments, don't hesitate to contact us at American Investment Planners LLC! Financial planning is our only business, and it is our goal to assist others with the development and implementation of their financial plans.

Ways To Save For The Holidays

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

Can you believe that Halloween is just one week away? With the holiday season approaching very quickly, we wouldn't be surprised if you've already started to think about the shopping that must be done. However, being that this is one of the more expensive seasons of the year, you might be thinking more along the lines of how you can cover holiday costs rather than the items you anticipate needing to purchase. Before the big Black Friday shopping frenzy hits, here are four ways that you can start to save:

Ways to save money for the holidays
Limit your spending: Although there are some monthly payments you just can't escape, there are certainly ways that you can limit your spending over the next few weeks. For example, you don't need to eat lunch or dinner out multiple times a week, and you can probably live without that new pair of shoes (and if you really want them, put them on your own holiday wish-list!).

Create a change jar: What do you do with all of the change you find in your wallet or pockets? If you usually just fling it anywhere when you get home, find a jar that you can use to begin collecting it all. While it may not seem like much at first, you'd be surprised how quickly a few quarters and dimes can add up.

DIY: It's only natural for your home to have some bumps and bruises that need to be repaired, but that doesn't always mean you need to call in a team of professionals. Should something come up that needs fixing, see how much you can do on your own to reduce the amount of money that comes out of your pocket.

Utilize coupons: Coupons aren't just valuable during the holiday season - they're great year round! Whether it be for groceries, gas, clothes - whatever it is you need at the time - utilize any coupons you have while they are still valid. Even if the savings are small, every little bit counts!

The holidays are meant to be a time of joy and cheer, so don't let yourself get stressed out over the costs associated with the season - start saving now instead! Sound like a plan?

Aside from the holidays, we at American Investment Planners LLC know that there are other circumstances where money can cause a bit of a headache, which is why we strive to reduce the amount of stress our clients feel from their finances. Through our retirement planning, estate planning and tax planning services (just to name a few), we can develop a strategy that sets you on a path towards financial success.

Where Should Snowbirds Retire To?

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130
Places for Snowbirds to Retire
If you're a native Long Islander, then you are certainly no stranger to the harsh weather that our winters can bring. And between the cold, snow and ice, even a mix of all three, we wouldn't be surprised if your post retirement plan is to pack up and leave! But where should you go, exactly? While most people might say "Florida," you'll need to start thinking a bit more specifically if relocation is really in your future; here's where U.S. News and World Report suggests:

1. Key West: Did you know that Key West is known to be one of the hottest places in the mainland? If cold temperatures are the last thing you want to experience later in life, you may find comfort in this part of the Florida Keys.

2. Fort Myers: Another Florida favorite for retirees is Fort Myers. Geographically located near the Gulf of Mexico, this particular area may be the perfect destination for those who want their winters to reflect warm summer temps.

3. Orlando: You don't have to be a Disney fan to enjoy this sunny spot! (But if you are, it's definitely a plus.) Recording an average temperature of about 73 degrees for the past 30 years, Orlando is an area you'll definitely want to consider if you just want to sit back and relax.

Aside from Florida, where else can you go if you'd like to escape the cold? When you think about heading south, you may also want to consider moving a bit towards the west:

4. Brownsville: Situated on the southern-most tip of Texas, Brownsville is referred to as the hottest city in the state. Also located near the Gulf of Mexico, this particular city tends to be known for its high humidity levels, which may make it feel even warmer on certain days.

5. Phoenix: Moving even further west, Arizona is another popular destination for snowbird retirees. Similar to Brownsville, Phoenix is known as the hottest city in its state - it's also one of the sunniest! Therefore, if you want to escape the cold and the clouds, this is one location you won't want to overlook.

Once you figure out where you want to relocate during retirement, the next step would be to start planning for it! To begin preparing for this next stage of your life, we hope you'll contact the team here at American Investment Planners LLC! We can be reached by phone at (516) 932-5130 or via email at info@americaninvestmentplanners.com.

Payments To Take Care Of Before You Retire

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

Payments To Take Care Of Before You Retire
If you are a soon-to-be retiree, then you already know that there is a lot that needs to be taken care of before you leave the office for the very last time. But if you're not, then you may not be so sure of what will be required of you when the time comes! Since the transition from being an active employee to a retiree is quite a large one that signals a huge turning point in your life, it's important to make sure you are completely prepared for the change to minimize the potential for problems where your income and money is concerned. But where should you start? One thing's for sure, you should take care of these payments first:
  1. The Mortgage: As one of your greatest expenses, your mortgage is one payment that should be completed or near completed by the time you retire. Even if your income is projected to be similar to what it was while you worked, to maximize your retirement funds this is one particular bill that you'll want to have for only very few months, if any, during the retirement phase.
  2. The Car: Are you known to lease cars? If you're due to trade in your lease and you know that retirement is in the near future, you may want to reconsider and purchase a vehicle instead. This way, you can work on paying off your car loan before retirement sets in! Even if you've gotten a great deal and your monthly payments aren't too high, the less expenses you have each month when retirement comes, the better.
  3. The House: Aside from your mortgage, it's best to take care of any other home-related expenses, such as a new roof, prior to retirement. If you suspect that you'll need repairs or replacements completed around your home a few years down the line, you're much better off paying for them now so that they don't consume your entire monthly savings should your income slow down.
Although you may feel ready financially for retirement, it's always best to prepare even more by eliminating as many expenses as possible while you're still out in the working world. If you have additional questions about retirement planning and what you should take care of in order to get ready for this change in your life, please don't hesitate to contact American Investment Planners LLC. After all, retirement planning is one of our specialties, and we have all of the tools and resources needed to develop a strategy for you and your family.

Meet Danette Gramegna: Client Services

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

Danette Gramegna, Client Services
At American Investment Planners LLC, we work as a cohesive unit to develop and deliver the most beneficial solutions to each of our clients. We pride ourselves on the fact that our firm is built on a group effort, and since it is so, we invite you to become a part of our team by getting to know each of our experts individually. Today, we would like to feature Danette Gramegna, who is a part of our Client Services team!

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Danette has been working in the financial planning field since 1985. Prior to joining the American Investment Planners LLC team in February of 2007, Danette first stepped into our industry when she worked for Merrill Lynch as a fill in for an employee who was out on maternity leave. While she was there, she realized just how exciting a career in this field could be and decided that this was where she saw her future! As a member of our team for over eight years now, Danette has shined and continues to do so day in and day out by assisting with client related matters.

However, although she excels in her position today, a career in financial planning was not exactly where Danette thought she would wind up. As a child, she dreamed of being a nurse and hoped that she would be able to help those in need. But, right out of high school she found herself working at the Lincoln Savings Bank in Brighton Beach, New York instead, and from there the rest is history!

When not assisting the clients we have here at American Investment Planners LLC, you can find Danette on a walking trail, and she probably won't be alone! Not only does Danette love taking her dogs out for a walk, but she also enjoys spending time with her husband, two daughters and five grandchildren. And when she isn't out on a trail, you can most definitely find Danette somewhere in New York City.

Danette - we are so thankful to have you as part of our client services team. Your dedication to your work and our clients makes you very valuable to us and we appreciate all of your efforts!

Tips For Saving Money During The Fall

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130

The season of pumpkin spice and spooky nights is officially here! We can't believe how fast the year has gone - can you? Now that we're entering the time of year where the holidays are approaching quickly, it's about time we talk about ways you can start to save this fall. See below for a few ideas:

How To Save Money During The Fall
Eat in rather than out: After a long day at work we know it can be a treat to have someone else do the cooking for you, but every time you step out of the house and into a restaurant, you're spending money that you could be saving. This fall, celebrate the season at home instead by whipping up your own meals that include flavors like pumpkin and apple cinnamon!

Decorate DIY style: Decorating your home for both fall and Halloween can be one of the most exciting parts of the season, but purchasing such decorations can get pretty costly. This year, consider taking a DIY approach and make fall wreaths, spider webs and other traditional decorations with materials you already have at home!

Spend time outdoors: Why stay inside when you can enjoy Long Island's fall foliage for free? If you're looking to make plans for you and your friends and/or family on any given day, think about taking a stroll at your local park or finding a nature walk nearby - not only can this save some money in the budget you've set aside for recreational activities, but it also gives you the opportunity to enjoy all that the season has to offer!

Inspect your home: Air leaks are an easy way to let your savings slip right out of your hands, so you'll want to make sure that your home is all sealed up before the cold weather takes over. When you have a chance, check the areas surrounding your windows and doors to make sure there is no place for the heat your home produces to escape.

Shop wisely: Need to update your wardrobe to fit in with the latest fall fashion? While shopping for new clothes may be a necessity this season, do so wisely - that means take advantage of all sales you come across and do your research to figure out which stores are offering deals and when.

As you fall into savings by using the above ideas this autumn, don't forget to think about saving for the future too. If you haven't thought about retirement or estate planning yet, now is a perfect time to get started. To learn how American Investment Planners LLC can help with various financial planning needs, please call (516) 932-5130 today.

Tips For Minimizing Estate Taxes

American Investment Planners LLC
500 North Broadway, Suite 260, Jericho, NY 11753
(516) 932-5130 / (866) 932-5130
Tips for minimizing estate taxes
Like everything else, your estate is subject to taxes, which means that you must consider them when planning for what will happen to it upon your passing. But, just like everyone else, we know that you'd probably like to find ways to minimize just how costly your taxes are. So can it be done? With the below tips, it's very well possible:

Plan in advance: The longer you wait to take care of estate planning matters, the more likely it is that your estate will have higher taxes to deal with. Simply put, that's because you and your financial planner will have less time to develop strategic solutions that could potentially keep unbearable taxes at an all time low. The sooner you meet with a team like American Investment Planners LLC, the easier it will be to create a plan that puts both you and your estate first - not taxes.

Take away assets: When you remove assets from your estate completely, you can minimize tax costs since there is naturally less to be taxed on! This means that when you plan for what will happen to your estate, you may want to consider alternative options for those assets that are likely to come at a high price. To best figure out how to distribute assets without falling victim to crazy-high estate taxes, speak with your financial planner!

Use marital transfers: So long as your spouse is a U.S citizen, any assets you leave in their name can typically be received on a tax free basis. However, you'll want to keep in mind that once the remaining spouse passes, taxes will need to be paid on their estate and what was left, so you'll need to think carefully about who will really inherit estate taxes in the long run. The good news, though? There are some exemptions that can be made - just ask your team of advisors about which ones may benefit you!

Although taxes are generally unavoidable, when you really research all your options you may just find that you can minimize how much you or your estate is responsible for paying in various situations. If it's time for you to work on your estate plan and you're hoping to keep your estate taxes on the low end, contact us at (516) 932-5130 to learn which solutions may be best for you!

Financial Tips For Those Who Have Lost A Spouse
Losing a spouse can surely be one of the most difficult times in your life, and having to make major decisions (such as those related to money) can make matters even worse. However, if this situation is current in your life and you're struggling to figure out what to do next, don't give it another thought - we're here to help! Below are a few tips we've put together for you:

Think carefully: If you've experienced a financial benefit due to your spouse's loss, think very carefully before making any decisions about what to do with it. While you may be inclined to share some money with friends or family or make a large purchase in memory of your spouse, think about how your income and own personal financial needs are going to change. Though this money may be "extra" to you now, down the line it may become something you need to rely on.

Update accounts: Upon your spouse's passing, accounts such as pensions, auto insurance, and anything related to a home or property must be updated. Although changing ownership of an account may not be the first thing on your mind, it's important to do so to ensure that you don't become financially responsible for more than you can handle.

Don't rush: While you may be in a hurry to take care of all financial matters, keep in mind that your emotions may cause you to make decisions that sound right at the time, but aren't the best for your future. Before you make any moves on things like your spouse's investments or life insurance, give yourself some time to come to terms with the situation.

Ask for help: During a time like this, you mustn't be afraid to ask for help - especially when it comes to money. Though you may want to have complete control over your spouse's assets and your financial future, rest assured knowing that there are teams like ourselves ready and willing to guide you in the right direction!

At American Investment Planners LLC, we understand just how life changing the loss of a spouse can be, and we know that it can certainly make dealing with money much harder - but that's why we're dedicated to being there for you. To learn how we can help you sort things out during this time, please give us a call at (516) 932-5130.

Market Update Part 2: China Value

As the American stock market has become a global stock market, a lot of ‘foreign’ terminology has crept into our language in both trying to analyze it as well as incorporating what it means into our personal financial planning process. Since worldwide market forces impact our own Federal Reserve’s reactions to national monetary policy, it behooves us to become familiar to the power our own imports and exports have in the global economy. The devaluation on modern monetary policy is a reduction in the value of a currency as it affects goods and services with which that currency is being exchanged. This is different than depreciation which occurs mainly in basic supply and demand behavior compared to a bank taking policy action.

A ‘currency war’ can occur where countries compete against each other to bring about a relatively low exchange rate for their own currency. Since the price to buy a country’s currency falls – so does the prices of their exports. Imports, on the other side, become more expensive. As far as services go, the domestic side receives a boost in demand both internally as well as from foreign sources. Naturally, other countries may want to get in on this competition which could lead to a general decline in international trade, harming all the competitors. Of course, this kind of devaluation is rare since most countries generally prefer to keep a high valuation for their own currency and allow market forces to work and determine proper pricing. Considering the United States is experiencing its tightest labor market in 40 years – the absence of wage ‘inflation’ is still pronounced, as we hear many of our clients still wondering when their promised raises will begin. With the collapse in oil prices, lowered commodity prices and the recent devaluation of the Chinese yuan – the inflation rate seems it will remain below the Fed’s 2% target threshold for the foreseeable future.

One lesson China is learning from our homegrown monetary and economic policies is that intervening to encourage growth works!  In this case, supporting export industries with a weaker currency should be a good thing, not a reason for markets to expect a doomsday scenario.  If other countries depreciate the value of their currencies, the U.S. dollar will grow stronger and a stronger dollar means cheap imports, less expensive vacations abroad and lower interest rates! Every industrialized nation, as well as many in the developing world, has resorted to currency devaluation as a "Band-Aid fix" at one point, as is told by The Fiscal Times. The market typically does the rest of the work to adjust prices of goods and services after the announcement. Adjustments to personal financial plans are needed as well. Anticipating future long term growth is equally as important as keeping on top of current financial needs. A properly balanced portfolio should still be tweaked as market conditions change.

Tips For Paying Off Your Debt

Tips for paying off your debt
Debt - a word many of us fear all too often. When it comes to feeling financially stable, realizing that you owe more than you have can be pretty intimidating and leave you feeling at a loss for what to do next. However, if you've ever been in this situation, know that you're not alone and rest assured that there are plenty of ways to get out of it - you just need to know what to do!

If you've come here today looking for ways to get back into shape financially, check out our tips for paying off your debt below:
  1. Set a budget: First and foremost, you'll need to set a budget for yourself that leaves you with enough money to start paying back what you owe. Keep in mind, though, that you will still have other expenses to care for, so you may need to make some adjustments to your current spending habits. For example, if you tend to spend a lot on things you don't need, see where you can cut back to dedicate some of that money to the bills that are piling up.
  2. Look at interest rates: If you have several loans that need to be paid back or are a holder of multiple credit cards, see which one is charging the most interest on your outstanding balances. Since interest is directly related to how much you are required to pay back over time, your best bet is to start focusing on those bills that accrue the most so that your debt doesn't continue to increase.
  3. Put the cards away: While you're working on paying off your debt, it may benefit you to take credit cards out of your wallet. This way, you won't be tempted to swipe and therefore will help you avoid having a bigger balance to deal with. Of course you may want to have one for emergencies, but if you do not give yourself the opportunity to use them, then you can work on keeping your debt from rising.

Market Update

American Investment Planners LLC

We are all witnessing the increased volatility in the global markets which began two weeks ago when China unexpectedly devalued its currency, raising fears that its economy might be in worse shape than previously considered. It is natural to wonder how this may impact our wealth. The daily ups and downs today will be frustrating. Wall Street’s initial sell-off may ease throughout the day. While we continue to be cautious, let’s remember to stay focused on the long-term. We'd like to point out that this sharp pullback has come in the wake of a seven-year bull market run. To ease some of your concerns, please click here to check out an article from industry gurus at Hartford Funds.

The old adage of “buy low, sell high” is sometimes forgotten when the market moves down. The history of the stock market illustrates its unpredictable nature and investors that stay in the market long enough will certainly see more ups and downs in the future. We must continue to stay focused on long-term goals rather than short-term statements. There are reasons to remain optimistic about the market’s future in the months ahead.

We at American Investment Planners LLC consider it our responsibility to assist our clients and keep them focused on their personal financial plan we have developed to reach their long-term financial goals. Please call us at 1-866-932-5130 if you would like to discuss the opportunities the market is currently presenting.

The Benefits Of Estate Planning

Though when you think about planning for your future you may be inclined to solely focus on how you'll support yourself during retirement, it's important to understand that you also need to plan for what will happen when your journey here comes to an end. That's where estate planning comes in. If you're unfamiliar with the term, estate planning ultimately refers to figuring out how your assets will be distributed upon your passing. But why is it such an important part of the planning process? Below, we outline a few reasons for you to consider:

The benefits of estate planning
Provide support: Spending some time on estate planning allows you to make sure that your surviving spouse and children (if applicable) are cared for. Especially if you have children that haven't reached the age of 18, you'll want to feel confident knowing that they will wind up in the right hands and are taken care of by those you name should something happen to you before then.

Ease the burden: The passing of a loved one is hard enough for family members as it is, but having to take care of everything that comes after that on their own can make things even more stressful. That's why it's so helpful to have everything sorted out for yourself while you are still able to make decisions!

Minimize taxes: The only way to make sure that your beneficiaries receive the maximum financial benefit after your passing is by having a solid estate plan. When you don't have a plan in place, it's more likely that the government will end up with some of the money you specifically left for family and/or friends.

Speed up the process: If you were someone's beneficiary in the past, then you may have found yourself waiting for quite some time before receiving anything that was left in your name. However, with an estate plan, you can rest assured knowing that your beneficiaries will receive what they are entitled to quickly. For example, you may decide to have your insurance just pay your beneficiaries directly rather than have them go through others.

At American Investment Planners LLC, we realize just how crucial estate planning is in addition to all else that comes with preparing for the future. But that's why we're here to help! For more information about our estate planning services, be sure to give us a call at (516) 932-5130.

Ways To Save Money At College

How to save money while at college
When it comes to college and money, figuring out how to save for tuition costs is only half the battle - once those are covered, students must find ways to save while they are living the college life. Though they may have a part-time or full-time job while attending school, bills sure do add up fast when you factor in the cost of supplies, transportation and so on and so forth.

Should you have a child preparing for their first day of college, or if you've come across this post because you're getting ready for the college experience yourself, below are a few tips that can be used to save:

Buy used instead of new: Textbooks are known to be one of the biggest expenses for college students. To reduce your textbook costs, always look for used instead of new, and always opt for renting when possible. And if your school's bookstore doesn't carry the reading material you need, don't hesitate to look online or at local stores instead.

Research meal plans first: If you'll be living on campus, chances are you'll be required to purchase a meal plan. However, while choosing the most expensive option may put your mind at ease knowing you have more than enough to cover the cost of breakfast, lunch and dinner, don't forget that you may wind up with leftover funds that you can't use at the end of the school year (not to mention, what if you aren't crazy about the food?). That being said, your best bet is to do some research and find out what types of food your school offers and for how much before selecting a plan.

Carpool and minimize driving time: Planning to commute? Then find a friend to carpool with! Additionally, try and plan your schedule so that you don't find yourself with hour breaks that encourage you to drive home. Even if you live nearby the college you attend, every trip back and forth uses gas (and money) that you could be saving.
